HOW DOES THE CONSOLIDATED OMNIBUS BUDGET RECONCILIATION ACT IMPACT EMPLOYERS AND THEIR EMPLOYEES?

Legislation (commonly referred to as COBRA) provides that employers having 20 or more employees must provide those employees that experience a qualifying event the right to continue their group health care coverage. Over the years, COBRA has been changed and/or clarified a number of times. As a result, the administration of COBRA has become an integral part of an employer’s responsibilities.

COBRA administration is complex and if not done properly can expose an employer to penalties and make an employer liable for medical bills and punitive damages.
